... and then ...

There is more to life than just work and study. Here is a small glimpse into other things I find interesting and worth mentioning.

Useful Internet Resources for...

Here are links to some of the gems I have found across the Internet.

SWEBOK

The Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) has everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask concerning software development. Also known as ISO TR 19769, it is backed by ACM and the IEEE Computer Society. There is also the System Engineering SEBOK and Program Management PMBOK.

NIST DADS

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) curates the Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures (DADS). This site provides descriptions and sometimes code for most of the named algorithm and structures in Computer Science. So if you were wondering why they keep miss-spelling 'trie', check it out.

Apache Commons

In school we necessarily have to learn to write our own linked-list, binary search, and similar routines. In software development careers, we never do that - we use these nice generalized robust libraries. While this link is just for the Java world, find there is something like it for every language (e.g., C++ Boost) - find one nearest you!

Design Patterns

We do not have to re-invent the wheel when designing software solutions. Know your design patterns, and own the book if you can. Pro-tip: as tempting a the Singleton pattern is, it won't solve all your problems and should be used only when necessary. Oh, and these will be on the interview questions... trust me.

Data Repositories

There are many benchmark data repositories to use, including UCI, KDNuggets, Kaggle, and even government sets regarding health, populations, economics, climate, and the world.

CRISP-DM

A common rookie mistake is to start building the analytic (solution space) before you know the problem space (or data/feature space). Use or at least be inspired by the CRISP-DM model.

Info is Beautiful

Crunching numbers is fun, but conveying the information visually is generally necessary to have an impact. This site has numerous great examples of how to convey information gleaned from data.

Know Your Analytics

Pro-tip: Always qualify what level of analytics you are going for: descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, or prescriptive. A similar but different viewpoint for characterizing analytics is the data and information fusion model.

XKCD

Where ex-NASA engineer Randall Monroe lacks in non-stick-figure art, he exponentially makes up for in wit and humor with a mathematical or technology twist.

PhD Comics

If you have been there, then you know just how true it seems. It is like the Dilbert of graduate school.

The Daily WTF

Potentially offensive abbreviation aside, these tech and development stories will make you laugh, and then maybe cry when it hits close to home.

Simple Sabotage

This is not really meant to be funny - it is serious stuff. However, per the content of section 11 (PDF page 32) I have ironically witnessed more than one group fail due to self-inflicted sabotage over the years.

Escape Room Success Record

If you have not tried escape rooms yet and you love problem solving, you should check them out! A co-worker introduced me to them a few years ago, and got me hooked. So far I have escaped 100% of the time and had a blast each time. Here is a record of the ones I have tried.
